Methods for Establishing Mammalian Cell Lines with Altered Mitochondrial DNA Copy Number

󠄀

OPPORTUNITY

Reduced mitochondria DNA (mtDNA) copy number is associated with mitochondrial disease, which is incurable, progressive, and often fatal in early childhood. Currently, unavailability of an effective means to manipulate mtDNA copy number in cells slows progress in our understanding of the mechanisms by which mtDNA deletion contributes to cellular (patho)physiology. Previous research established that persistent damage may lead to a loss of a fraction of mtDNA. Ideally, cell lines with both increased and decreased mtDNA copy number would be developed to permit the study of novel therapeutics and diagnostics.

BREAKTHROUGH IN CELL LINES WITH ALTERED MITOCHONDRIAL DNA

Researchers at the University of South Alabama have developed methods for generation of cell lines with both increased and decreased mtDNA copy number.

COMPETITIVE ADVANTAGES

•  Improved ability to manipulate mtDNA copy number in cells

•  Cell lines with both increased and decreased mtDNA copy number

•  Increased potential for discovery of therapies for progressive and often fatal diseases
